Introduction The Alma College Spring Term offers professors and students unique opportunities for teaching and learning. Students enroll for one course, which begins April 28 and ends May 23. Many professors take advantage of this format to conduct travel courses, both within the United States and abroad. For example, Professor David Clark's biology class will collect spiders in central Arkansas, Professor Utte Stargardt's English class will study medieval English literature in Great Britain, Professor Michael Yavenditti's history class will visit Civil War battlefield sites in their studies, and Professor Catherine Fobe's sociology class will investigate gender relations in Peru. These are just a few of the many courses offered during Spring Term 2002 at Alma College. This web site documents Professor Liping Bu's Spring Term course on the history and future of China. In collaboration with Dr. David Lawrence, assistant professor of Communication, Dr. Bu has arranged to send digital photos and student reflections of their trip back to Alma College via the Internet. Course Description and Goals This course aims to help students understand China through both classroom learning and field trips. Students are expected to learn about China's rich ancient history and cultures as well as its dynamic economic developments and social changes today. China is a land of diversity few people in the world truly realize until they see it all. Although China is about the size of the United States, its population is six times that of America. Undoubtedly China faces tremendous challenges in going through drastic economic and social changes. our three-week study allows students to see with their own eyes this ancient civilization taking on a modern drive in the 21st century. We are going to travel from Shanghai to Nanjing, to Xiian, and then to Beijing.
