The Best Plays

Hamlet

Hamlet was the best play because it excellently depicted the story of Hamlet. The actors in this play were wonderful and moving, they made Shakespeare interesting. This company also was a modern dress ply and allowed for Hamlet to really become timeless. Honestly this was one of the few plays I actually liked and was moved by

Dog In A Manger

Dog In the Manger ranks in at number two because it was also wonderful and was absolutely hilarious. I honestly didn’t know what to expect from this play or company and was pleasantly surprised. A nice break from Shakespeare’s language. This company also paid a lot of attention to the little details. Stage blood and fake teeth are always fun.

Tamar’s Revenge

Tamar’s Revenge, what can I even begin to say by this play. It was the most moving of all the plays but a bit too shocking for me. I did not like the rape scene. But at least I was moved by this play unlike other ones where we were supposed to feel for the characters but didn’t.

Macbeth

MacBeth had great actors. I also loved how they used the stage and their props. The use of shadows on the walls and any scene with the witches were amazing. The use of stage blood in this play was phenomenal. At this point in our trip we really needed a big blood and guts type of play. MacBeth filled that role.

The Merchant of Venice

Merchant of Venice was also very good. This company, although traveling, still had a descent use of props and scene changes. I liked how in this play they divided and defined their characters by the color of their costumes. They also created their own music on stage and behind the scenes which was cool and different.

Hamlet

—this was (by far) the best play. From the way it was directed and performed I saw it as able to connect with the younger audience of today and the themes (depression, suicide, dead and remarried parents) of the play were done like they happen to kids today in our lives. The lighting and set design were the best I have yet to see. This performance had the most impact on me and I will remember it for a long time.

Dog In The Manger

—this play was the most unexpected experience at the theatre I ever had. The RSC did an amazing job and made the play truly funning and enjoyable to watch. Reading this play and seeing it performed live were two totally different experiences.

Merchant of Venice

—this play was also enjoyable and the acting was all well done. I loved how simple the set and the little use of props. The director not only did a superb job acting out the part of Shylock but also for his interpretation of the play which I found to be somewhat different than what we talked about in class.

Mercutio and the Nurse did a fantastic job for the comedy apart of the play

Dog In A Manger

The cast’s chemistry together was amazing and breathtaking. The interpretation and acting of the script had us laughing all night long.

The Merchant of Venice

I loved how they made the wardrobe fit the “mood” of the scene and also the wonderful acting.

Hamlet

What this company did with sound and music was amazing. I also really enjoyed the fabulous acting and the creative and fun props they used (boom box).

Romeo and Juliet at the Globe

minus Juliet’s performance this was the best production of this play I have ever seen. I loved the “feeling” that I was in Shakespeare’s time while watching the play in the Globe. The acting was outstanding, especially the nurses, the friar, Benvolio and Romeos.

Jared Weir

Romeo and Juliet (at the Globe Theater)
This is what Shakespeare wanted us to see! Bawdy, loud, and exciting, the direction of the production used the reconstructed Globe to its fullest potential. However, the title should have read “Romeo and Mercutio” because they were the riveting distractions of the performance.

All’s Well That Ends Well
The best acting we saw all trip. Although, lacking the authentic feel we took from the Globe, this is the best of West End Shakespeare. The individual performances were only outshined by the chemistry between actors. The play was a joy to watch if you could keep the James Bond theme song out of your head!
Hamlet
A modern interpretation complete with politicians, Californian 2nd wives and Goth kids. The schizophrenic Hamlet was acted so well it bordered on creepy and the production was a huge success.

Dog in a Manger (The Swan)
a. I enjoyed this play because it was funny, we were in a close intimate theatre, the actors were great, they also had good chemistry with one another, and it was a recent up to date translation. I think I also liked it because it was totally new play; I had not studied it before and came in with an unbiased opinion.

Romeo & Juliet (at the Globe – minus Juliet)
a. It was great to see this play at the Globe the way Shakespeare intended for audiences to see it. The actors did a great job interacting with the audience and making them feel part of the play. Some of the secondary actors really stood out in this play and carried the scenes. I think the fact that we were in the Globe had a lot to do with liking this performance.
Hamlet (The Old Vic)
a. The actor who played Hamlet – John Annan did an excellent job portraying Hamlet and everything he was going through. He played Hamlet as borderline insane and his performance was very believable. I also really liked how the director chose to go with a younger actor. He was someone I could identify with. An older actor would not achieve the same affect. The other actresses and actors were also wonderful, but Hamlet stole the show.
Merchant of Venice (Theatre Royal – Bury St. Edmund)
a. I was the research person for this play. I had a lot of background knowledge going into this play compared to all the others. I had done research on the company performing it so I knew a bit going into the play. I really liked the stage and the props and how simple they were. I also thought that the actor who played Shylock and the director had an amazing performance.

1. The Dog In The Manger - RSC
Everything worked! The casting was perfect, the acting was some of the best I’ve saw, the staging and costumes were great, it was awesome! The cast had a hilarious script to work with and they made the most of it, I laughed the entire time!
Hamlet
I loved the modern dress and staging. This play had just the right blend of comedic relief and tragedy. The acting was wonderful -- Hamlet and Ophiela were very convincing in their madness. By far the best Hamlet I’ve ever saw.
The Merchant of Venice
Again, I liked the dress and the blend of comedy and sadness. This was my first time seeing this performed, and I loved it. Shilock was great!
